Finding the sweet spot
Kareem Joseph’s entrepreneurial spirit runs in the family, inspired by his father, who started a construction company.Though he’d worked many jobs, Kareem always knew he wanted to be his own boss.
After exploring different ventures, Kareem happened to meet a man running an Italian ice truck. Though he was inspired by this introduction, his research quickly revealed that the slushy ice business was crowded and competitive.
As he explored alternatives, Kareem found that the cotton candy business might be what he was looking for.
Creating whimsical treats and magical experiences
Once he decided on his direction, Kareem didn’t waste any time, starting Yummi Kotton in 2021.
He invested in an industrial cotton candy machine and found festivals that he could participate in.
One after another, he found success at these events and began expanding into private events like birthday parties. Even his own children were excited about the business, helping him create his candy.
Initially, Kareem primarily planned to capture the attention of kids at the festivals with fun flavors like Sassy Apple and Birthday Cake.
But he soon realized that adults were equally as fascinated by the creative shapes and the rush of nostalgia they got when they ate cotton candy.
This response to his business inspired him to further develop his brand as not just a cotton candy vendor, but as a business that provides a magical experience for adults and children alike.
Kareem continues to experiment with creating different characters like Spongebob or Bluey to give his customers a fun and delicious experience.
Winning the Credibly Small Business Award
As one of the winners of the Credibly Small Business Award, Kareem hopes to use the funds to upgrade his tent for events.
Today, foot traffic at big events and social media are two of his biggest marketing avenues. By elevating the look of his signs and displays for the tent, he hopes to get even more recognition and followers from each event he attends.
In addition, Kareem plans to use the funds to invest in a third cotton candy machine so he can expand into more events each weekend.
Spinning larger dreams
Kareem hopes to continue to participate in larger events and eventually open a brick-and-mortar shop so his customers can enjoy his treats when they want, not just at events. In the long run, his dreams expand even further.
